Farol: A Beacon of Minimalist Design and Sustainability

Unveiling the Award-Winning Ceiling Lamp by Katia Martins and Tiago Russo

Farol, a ceiling lamp that marries minimalist design and sustainability, is the brainchild of renowned designers Katia Martins and Tiago Russo. This piece, which draws inspiration from Portugal's rich history of cork exploration, is a testament to the designers' commitment to creating aesthetically pleasing, eco-friendly products.

Farol's unique properties lie in its defined geometric shapes and solid neutral colours. The lamp combines the natural shade of cork with painted steel, resulting in a simple and minimalist design that emits a soft, diffuse spotlight. Even when not in use, Farol makes a statement through its bold structure and the combination of materials. When several lamps are grouped together, they create a stronger visual impact.

The lamp is a product of traditional techniques, handmade components, and excellent craftsmanship. It is made using stainless steel metal spun and cork lathe machining. The two main parts of the lamp are linked together by the pressure of the screw thread, eliminating the need for additional fixing or glues.

Farol is a fully eco-friendly product, made only with recyclable components. This commitment to sustainability extends to the packaging, which is developed with kraft board, paper, and bio-adhesive. Every detail of the Farol lamp has been thought through to respect the environment and future materials being used, whether it's cork or the textile cord.

The lamp is easy to install. The power-saving bulb is already installed, and the user only has to attach the electrical components for Farol to start its beam. The lamp comes with a 1m cable and a full installation kit, making it suitable for various settings.

Developed between 2018 and 2021, and launched in its full range in 2022, Farol ceiling lamp is one of the signature designs of both Trick Design Ltd and Katia Martins. The iconic minimal shape started to appear in Katia's work around 2012, and a full aluminium set was originally ideated and tested in 2015. However, over the years, it was redesigned into a product that fully guarantees its ecological and sustainable approach, becoming a highlight of the brand's environmental efforts.

Farol's design process was marked by a continuous search for the ultimate materials and ways of considering and improving the environmental questions and issues around product design. The lamp's shaping, shelled as two inverted deep funnels, required very specific techniques and great craftsmanship to achieve a seamless solution. The challenge was to contradict the premise of producing in several layers glued together, by creating the deep shapes into a single conformation method, keeping the environment in mind.

Farol's excellence in design and commitment to sustainability have not gone unnoticed. The lamp was awarded Silver in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2023, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
